What is the Barista Time Trial!
The IBC protocol, created by Espresso Academy, is strictly based on the professional and workplace context. Among these elements, one of the most important is efficiency and speed.
To strengthen these elements and provide its students with the best professional training, Espresso Academy has created the Barista Time Trial, which at the same time is:
-
The final test of the Advanced Barista exam
-
The format of a barista competition
-
The chance to beat the records—your personal record, your country’s record, the world record!
Are you ready to beat your record? Are you ready to become very fast?

How the Barista Time Trial Works
Whether it's the final test for the Advanced Barista exam or a competition, the Barista Time Trial follows the same format. The candidate is placed in a bar setup with all the equipment ready to go, and must serve ideal "groups of customers" coming to the counter.

Basically, the trainer will randomly choose some typical café recipes that have been practiced during the exam and will ask for:
-
4 preparations right away
-
4 after 2:10 minutes
-
2 after 3 minutes
The candidate must prepare the drinks, serving the customers in the right order, without making any mistakes or technical errors (like badly frothed milk, not purging the machine, improper tamping, etc.). Each mistake adds penalty seconds.
At the end of the test, the timer is stopped, any penalty seconds are added, and the official time is recorded.
-
You pass the exam if you finish in under 16 minutes.
-
If you finish the Barista Time Trial in under 7:30 minutes, you get the golden Advanced Barista diploma.
-
If (at the time of writing this page) you finish the test in under 4:19 minutes, you set the NEW world record!
