Are you ready? Espresso Academy first Online SCA Coffee Sustainability Course is designed for all coffee industry members, from farmers and roasters to baristas and coffee lovers, aiming to explore and enhance their understanding of sustainability and coffee chain.
Coffee holds a high position among global markets, ranking highly in both value and volume. Its intricate supply chain spans from the growers/farmers to the consumer, encompassing numerous professional roles along the way. The focus of the Online Coffee Sustainability Course is, for that reason, the social, economic, and environmental aspects of the coffee supply chain.
The course aim is to clarify the complex but manageable sustainability challenges in the coffee chain. Its main objective is to assist in identifying and applying the most effective solutions.
Online SCA Coffee Sustainability Course Trainers
The course is led by Michele Cantarella and Simone Celli
Michele Cantarella is the first AST Italian of the sustainability program of the Specialty Coffee Association. Michele is the main trainer of the Espresso Academy in Salerno. He is AST also for brewing and barista area.
Simone Celli is trainer for Barista, Brewing and Latte Art courses. He is Latte Art Grading certifier and one of the founders of the Italian Barista Certificate system. Simone is a sustainability passionate of the coffee supply chain.
Program Online SCA Coffee Sustainability Course
The course is divided in two days, each composed by four hours. It starts at 10 AM (Italian time) and concludes at 2 PM (Italian time) through the Zoom platform.
Day one
– Meaning and history of the term sustainability applied to the coffee chain
– What are the challenges and stakeholders interested in the sustainability of the coffee supply chain?
– The Columns of sustainability
– Climate change and agronomy of coffee plantations
– Volatility and fluctuations in coffee prices, economic inequity in coffee production, and possible solutions
Day two
– Gender equity, the age of coffee farmers and work on coffee farms
– Farmers Organizations, Certifications, and Ethical Marketing
– The importance of research and development in the coffee sector
– Opportunities and limitations of the most common sustainability solutions
– Possibility of SCA Coffee Sustainability exam foundation level

This course gives access to the SCA Coffee Sustainability Foundation exam, which can be held, upon request of the student, directly at the end of the course.

The Coffee Sustainability Program develops like the modules of the Coffee Skills Program in three successive levels: Foundation, Intermediate, and Professional at the end of which, after passing the test, an SCA Sustainability Certification is obtained.
